Greetings, Echo-Walkers —
We're thrilled to share our first official dev log for The Veil, and it's been an exciting few weeks at Ebonreach Studios.
We've been deep in foundational systems — where responsiveness and feel truly define the player experience. Here’s what we’ve locked in so far:
🔹 8-Way Omni Movement
We’ve completed our omni-directional movement system, which allows fluid 8-direction control on keyboard and controller. Whether you're weaving through enemies or exploring Veil-scarred ruins, motion feels snappy and reactive.
🔹 Dodge Rolling & Veil Dashing
Dodge Roll: A core mechanic for both Light and Shadow players. Timing-based evasion with I-frames built in — fast, visceral, and satisfying.
Veil Dash: A teleport-style movement burst, blending instantly into the Veil current. This is where mechanics meet lore — and it feels amazing.
We’re tuning these to ensure the controls remain tight but cinematic, especially during combat transitions.
We’ve begun early work on Veil-based powers across the three paths. While not final, here’s a preview of what’s functioning in-engine:
Echo Heal (Luminous Path): Restores health over time to self or allies within a radiant zone. Visually beautiful — think shimmering threads of light rippling through the environment.
Soul Rend (Shadowed Path): Damage and drain effect that pulls energy from enemies and heals the user. Feels aggressive and immediate.
Veil Shift (Equinox): Temporarily switch between Light and Shadow abilities. Balanced but powerful — a big part of what makes the Equinox path so unique.
These abilities already feel great to use, and we’re iterating on the visual FX and feedback to ensure they hit with impact.
